General Hospital: Hidden script meanings

Image captured from GH YT from episode aired 3-6-15
On Friday, Franco entered Luke's hospital room with the intention of killing him.  The first thing he said to him was, “I am Franco Baldwin, you hurt my father, prepare to die.”  That line came from, “The Princess Bride.”  This past month we have heard many lines, seen props and heard talk regarding other movies and TV shows on General Hospital.

Olivia talked to Franco about Mad Men.  We saw Tony Geary supposedly bite the tip of Scott Baldwin’s ear off and then wear the Hannibal Lector Mask and now the line from the Princess Bride.  In fact, Franco talked about pre-1992 references to Nina the other day when they were in the Recreation room at Shady Brook.
The Young and Restless Fans would get the Phyllis reference when Franco was calling Nina Phyllis which was her character when she was on The Young and the Restless.

General Hospital keeps referencing, “The Golden Girls,” but the most heartfelt scenes and references was when the character of Kiki was saying goodbye to the character of Franco.

Franco kept saying to Kiki that he knew her when she was a baby and talked about how much he loved raising her and her mother even though her mother was a handful.  Franco was referencing his character of Todd Manning from One Life to Live and that entire dialog.  That was a special goodbye from Todd to his on screen daughter Starr.  The One Life to Live fans knew exactly what was going on and the tears flowed.

Why is General Hospital constantly referencing other TV shows, characters and story-lines?  Does this bring more viewers to the show?  Does it endear them to the viewer?
Do you enjoy when General Hospital does these outside Movie and TV references in their scripts?
